Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art through her aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could continue her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was a moral compass and urged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Though DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton and with her extended family, she lived with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she spent there to inspire her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduating she attended in the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with diplomas in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to produce to broadcast journalism while she was in the college. DuVernay began as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to observe the house of one member of the jury. She was also asked to take a look at their trash. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to go into the public relations business. DuVernay was brought on straight after graduating from college as the junior publicist for a small studio. She launched in 1999 her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Her company launched a range of lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
